Yugoslavia is a formable nation in the central Europe. It can be formed by any nation with a Jugoslav primary culture except Bulgarian (Serbian, Croatian, Slovene, Bosniak).

Historical background

The Slavic parts of central and southern Europe were long under control of non-Slavic empires, particularly the Austrians and Ottomans. The concept of a unified South Slavic country began to take hold in the 19th century, especially as the Ottoman Empire weakened. However, the realization of Yugoslavia would not come until the end of World War I, when the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire allowed its Slavic territories to join with the Kingdom of Serbia as Yugoslavia.

Formation

All of the above countries are releasable by any country that controls their capital; Croatia also requires the country to control an additional core state. Yugoslavia can also be released by any country which controls its capital and two other core states and has researched Invention pan nationalism.png Pan-nationalism.

Core states

Yugoslavia has 11 core states, comprising the northern part of the Balkans strategic region plus the states Istria, Banat, and Délvidék. These comprise the homelands of its primary cultures.

Yugoslavia's core states contain a large amount of Goods coal.png coal and smaller amounts of Goods iron.png iron and Goods lead.png lead, but no Goods sulfur.png sulfur. Several of its states have the State trait good soils.png 30px trait, increasing agriculture throughput, however the total amount of Arable land.png arable land is not very much and only Bosnia hosts any plantations.

Serbia starts in a rough situation, which is troubling as they are the primary contender to form a nation of all Slavs. They have no industry besides a small deal of agriculture, with only 10 starting brigades, only owning their capital state. Serbia possesses cores on Southern Serbia and Banat, as well as having a number of historical Yugoslav lands as homelands of Serbian culture. The entire population is Serbian and Orthodox, which pairs well with the starting laws “National Supremacy” and “State Religion”. As Serbia expands, the player will have to choose between oppressing the Turkish, Albanian, Hungarian, and other minorities who are discriminated against at start, or to change the laws of Serbia to extend rights and prevent radicalism.

Serbia has some historical characters, but other interest group leaders are randomly generated. A player can use this to their advantage, by restarting the game until a set up is found with the desired character combination. A suggestion would be a Jingoist Landowner, a Republican Armed Forces, and an Abolitionist Orthodox Church. In this set up, laws like Professional Army and Colonial Resettlement can be passed to gain approval by the Landowners, while the Armed Forces and Church can be used to begin abolishing Serfdom and weakening the power of the Landowners.

Perhaps most pressing, you begin as a protectorate of the Ottoman Empire. Addressing this insult will be the primary diversion point for the player’s strategy, as how one goes about acquiring independence and freedom from Turkish hands will completely change the steps needed to succeed with any given strategy. To form Yugoslavia, Serbia needsland from both the Ottomans and Austria,

One strategy is for the player to be patient and wait until 1856, building your country up and biding your time. January 1st, 1856 the Ottoman Empire - unless the AI unfortunately finishes the “Sick Man of Europe” journal events - will become an unrecognized power, and all subjects they have will suddenly become independent, with all the benefits and issues that brings. Players will have to have adequately prepared their market and industry before this happens. A player who builds a Serbia with a large manufacturing sector, but no agriculture, will suddenly be swarmed by angry mobs and radicalism when the Ottoman wheat is closed off to Serbian consumers.

A more “active” method begins at day 1, where the entire focus is to look for the first opening to jump the Ottomans with a Serbian play for independence and southern Serbia, and to bring either Austria or Russia in as a Great Power backer. In this case, the player will post-independence build their economy from the ground up, and will need a solid understanding of production and consumption, as well as pop growth and vertical internet, to truly make a nation of all Slavs a Great nation.
